A Small Fix With a Big Payoff

That twinge when you bite into something cold, hot, or a little too sweet? Nine times out of ten, it’s a cavity asking for fifteen minutes of your time. One sitting, one tooth-coloured filling, no drama. That’s the whole story at Serene Smiles.

What is a tooth filling?

A tooth filling replaces the part of a tooth destroyed by decay with a strong, sealed material (usually a tooth-coloured composite), so the tooth can chew normally again and bacteria can’t get back in through the same spot. Most fillings take one visit and one round of local anaesthes

Why This Matters

A cavity rarely announces itself with fireworks. It starts small: a rough patch your tongue keeps checking, a wince over hot chai, a bit of food that seems to live in that one back tooth no matter how hard you floss. Easy to ignore. Until it isn’t.

Left alone, that small patch of decay doesn’t stay small. It works through the tooth one layer at a time, and every layer it clears gets it a little closer to the nerve, which is the real difference between a short filling appointment now and a root canal down the line. The good news: the fix is almost always simpler than people expect. A filling clears out the decayed part of the tooth and seals it with a strong material, in one visit, with nothing more than a numbing gel and (if needed) a local injection standing between you and the rest of your day.

Which Filling Is Right for You?

Composite (Tooth-Coloured): The Everyday Choice

Best for front teeth, back teeth, chipped or worn teeth, anywhere you want the filling to disappear. Made from a resin blended with fine glass particles, shaded to match the tooth around it. Lasts commonly 7 to 10 years with normal care. It's not the cheapest option and needs a dry field while it's placed, but for most patients today, this is the right default.

Glass Ionomer: The Specialist for Deep or Young Teet

Best for cavities near the gum line, decay that runs below the gum, and baby teeth. Made from acrylic and fluoroaluminosilicate, it releases fluoride, which keeps working against decay after it's placed. It lasts a shorter time than composite, chosen for what it does rather than raw endurance. Not built for a heavy chewing surface, but a strong pick where the gum line or a child's tooth is involved.

Ceramic (Porcelain): The Camera-Ready Option

Best for visible teeth where colour match and shine both matter. Made from fired porcelain that resists staining better than composite, even against years of chai and turmeric. Often lasts 10 to 15 years. Priced at the premium end of the range, and usually made in a lab rather than placed in a single sitting.

Do You Need a Filling? Check the Signs

Ticked two or more? That’s usually decay talking, and it’s a lot easier to fix at this stage than after it reaches the nerve.

Hello everyone I started coming to Dr. Rajat Mathur 12 years back and it has been good journey and experience getting dental treatment from him. I was facing lot of problems in bite and then consulted few dentists but they were not able to diagnose the cause. Though, when I visited him, he properly checked the situation and a major issue of grinding of teeth was diagnosed by him. Since then getting the treatment from him and visiting the clinic when called or required. Overall, it has been a great experience getting the treatment from him with all positive vibes and slow chanting music in his clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting a filling hurt?
The filling itself doesn’t hurt. Clearing out the decay is the part people worry about, and that’s exactly what local anaesthesia is for. Shallow cavities often need no numbing at all. Deeper ones get a numbing gel followed by a local injection, and if needles make you anxious, ask about conscious sedation.
Most single fillings take 20 to 40 minutes, including the numbing. Multiple fillings in one visit will run longer. Dr. Mathur will give you a realistic time estimate before starting.
It depends on the material and where it sits. Composite typically runs 7 to 10 years, and ceramic 10 to 15. Fillings on back teeth doing heavy chewing tend to wear faster than ones up front.

A filling replaces decay that hasn’t reached the nerve. A root canal is needed once decay or infection has reached the nerve itself, and it involves removing that nerve tissue rather than just sealing the surface. Catching a cavity early is usually what keeps it a filling instead of a root canal. See our Root Canal Treatment page for that comparison.

Yes. Baby teeth get cavities too, and treating them matters since decay left alone can affect the permanent tooth growing underneath. Glass ionomer fillings are often used for kids because they release fluoride and are gentle to place.
For most tooth-coloured fillings, the material is fully hardened by the curing light used to place it, so you can eat once the numbness wears off, usually within a couple of hours. For a deeper filling or one with a liner, Dr. Mathur will tell you if anything needs a longer wait.
Many health insurance plans in India cover dental fillings under outpatient or day-care benefits, though coverage varies by policy. Bring your policy details to your visit and the team will help you check what applies.

Both match your natural tooth colour, so the choice usually comes down to visibility and budget. Composite is the everyday choice: it’s placed and finished in one visit and holds up well for regular chewing. Ceramic resists staining a little better over the years and is often chosen for front teeth that are always on display, but it costs more and is made in a lab rather than placed the same day. Dr. Mathur will recommend one based on where the cavity is and what matters most to you.
